How I Work
Different techniques work for different people. For example, some people do well with a cognitive approach in counselling (thinking through irrational or unwanted beliefs) while others do better with an emotionally based approach (processing the painful emotions that may lock the unwanted beliefs in place). Other people come looking for breathwork, which is called "working somatically".
I often draw on cognitive-behavioral principles to transform unwanted life experiences. These techniques tend to bring about the fastest visible improvements in the quality of life, however, they may not resolve the underlying issue that caused the problems.
Sometimes it helps to understand how your life was shaped by the generations before you, and to examine the issues that you “inherited”. Sometimes it is important to “process” painful situations from your childhood. Whatever the approach we settle on, my clients find that my warm and empathetic personality tends to foster the trust and openness that leads to a positive outcome. I offer a safe and supportive environment, where your boundaries and limits are respected.
Here are examples of techniques I might use in a counselling session:
My philosophy is that while it may not be possible to completely eliminate an issue from every layer of your mind/body/spirit, you can aspire to a realistic goal of your life not being controlled by the issue on a daily basis. We all deserve a life we feel good about!

Here are examples of techniques I might use in a counselling session:
- Role-playing, including Gestalt and theater techniques
- Giving a voice to different parts of yourself to resolve dilemmas
- Art therapy techniques
- Practicing how to “think through” a situation
- Teaching body-mind techniques that keep you centered and grounded, so you can better handle difficult situations
- Doing a Bowen-style family history map to examine your issues in the context of your family relationships and generational legacies
- Developing a mutually agreed upon program for personal growth exercises to speed up progress in between sessions.
